A railroad town
Newton was founded in 1871 and named after Newton, Massachusetts, home of some of the Santa Fe railroad's stockholders. In 1872 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's western terminal and the railhead for the Chisholm Trail were established there, and the town became an important shipping point for Texas cattle. It is the county seat of Harvey County, also founded in 1872. Newton had 18,602 residents and about 8,256 housing units in the 2020 census.
Older neighborhoods and original wood siding
Newton's older neighborhoods have homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, many with original wood clapboard, wood shingles in gables and decorative trim. Some have been covered with aluminum, vinyl or asbestos-cement shingles over the years. For owners of these homes, the main questions are:
- Restore or replace? Sound wood siding can be repaired and repainted, preserving original character. Widespread rot or paint that will not stay on points to replacement.
- Lead paint. Pre-1978 painted wood may contain lead; contractors must follow EPA lead-safe rules.
- Hidden damage. Covered wood siding may hide rot at sills and around windows.
See wood siding and repair vs. replacement.
Replacement that respects the house
When replacing siding on an older Newton home, you can keep the look: narrow lap fiber cement or engineered wood with a smooth finish, wide corner boards and window trim, and shingle-style products in gables. Painted products let you choose period-appropriate colors. James Hardie places Kansas in its HZ5 zone for freeze-thaw climates. See fiber cement and LP SmartSide.
Mid-century and newer homes
Newton's mid-century ranches often have aluminum, hardboard or early vinyl that is reaching the end of its life. Newer neighborhoods mostly have vinyl, sometimes with stone, where hail repair and eventual replacement are the main needs. See siding replacement and vinyl siding.
Hail and wind north of Wichita
Newton sits in open country along I-135, and spring storms bring hail and high winds regularly. Brittle older vinyl and aluminum tend to fail first. Photograph damage before repairs and contact your insurer. See hail damage siding.
Permits
Newton is in Harvey County, outside MABCD's jurisdiction. Check with the City of Newton about permits, contractor requirements and any historic preservation rules that apply to your property. Rural addresses fall under Harvey County. See the permit guide for background.
Lifespans and planning
HomeGuide's published ranges put typical lifespans at about 30 to 40 years for vinyl, 30 to 50 for engineered wood and 50 to 75 for fiber cement; well-maintained wood can last far longer, as many Newton homes show. Actual life depends on installation, maintenance and exposure. See how long does siding last in Kansas?
Soffit, fascia and trim
Older homes in Newton often have decorative eaves and trim that need attention. Repairing them, or replacing them with low-maintenance materials in similar profiles, is often part of a siding project. See soffit and fascia.
Painting original wood
If you keep original wood siding, the paint job is what protects it. Proper preparation (lead-safe on older homes), priming bare wood, caulking joints and using quality exterior paint can give years of protection. Watch the south and west walls, which weather first, and touch up peeling areas before water gets into the wood.
Windows and siding
Many older Newton homes have original or aging windows. If both windows and siding are due, doing them together allows better flashing and trim. See windows and siding together and siding and windows.
